Gastroenterology and Hepatology focus on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of disorders and diseases related to the digestive system and liver.

We study gastrointestinal (GI) tract, which includes the organs involved in the digestion and absorption of food. This includes the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine (colon), rectum, and anus. We diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcers, inflammatory bowel disease (such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), celiac disease, gastrointestinal bleeding, and various types of gastrointestinal cancers.

We also treat liver diseases such as viral hepatitis (viral hepatitis A, B and C), alcoholic liver disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), autoimmune liver diseases, liver cirrhosis, liver failure, and liver cancers.

We perform endoscopy, colonoscopy, and liver biopsy, which aid in diagnosing and treating digestive and liver disorders.

Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy is a medical procedure that involves the examination of the large intestine (colon) and the rectum using a long, flexible tube with a camera attached to it. It is commonly performed to diagnose and monitor conditions affecting the colon. Some of the main indications for a colonoscopy include:Screening for Colorectal Cancer: Colonoscopy is a recommended screening test for individuals at average risk of developing colorectal cancer. It is typically recommended starting at the age of 45, although the age may vary depending on individual and family history.Investigation of Gastrointestinal Symptoms: Colonoscopy may be performed when a patient presents with persistent gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, changes in bowel habits (diarrhea or constipation), unexplained weight loss, or anemia.Polyp Detection and Removal: Colonoscopy is used to detect and remove polyps, which are abnormal growths that can potentially develop into colorectal cancer. Removing polyps during colonoscopy can significantly reduce the risk of developing cancer.Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Evaluation: Colonoscopy helps diagnose and monitor chronic conditions such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, collectively known as inflammatory bowel disease. It allows the visualization of the colon to assess the extent and severity of inflammation.Follow-up of Prior Abnormal Tests: If previous tests, such as a fecal occult blood test (FOBT) or a flexible sigmoidoscopy, have shown abnormal results, a colonoscopy may be recommended to further investigate the findings.Surveillance of High-Risk Individuals: Individuals with a personal or family history of colorectal cancer, polyps, or certain genetic conditions (such as Lynch syndrome) are considered at higher risk. Regular colonoscopies may be advised to monitor for any precancerous or cancerous changes.It's important to note that these are common indications, but the decision to perform a colonoscopy is made on an individual basis by healthcare professionals, taking into account the patient's specific situation and medical history.

About us

Dr. Kasim Kazbay studied medicine at Ege University Medical School in Izmir, Turkey, his native country. He did his Internal Medicine residency at NYU and his Gastroenterology and hepatology fellowship at Medical University of South Carolina.

He also holds M.Sc. degree from McGill University, Montreal, Canada and Ph.D. form Mt Sinai Medical School in NY, NY, in the field of Microbiology and Immunology.

He is board certified (ABIM) in Gastroenterology and Hepatology. He is practicing medicine for the last 24 years.

Dr. Kazbay is born and raised in Turkey. He finished his Internal Medicine residency at New York University after obtaining his MD degree in Turkey. He completed his Gastroenterology and Hepatology fellowship in Charleston, SC at MUSC.

Dr Kazbay has more than 20 years of experience and performs a number of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures like colonoscopy, esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), with all the therapeutic applications such as polypectomy, biopsy, dilations, stent placements etc.

He also holds M.Sc. degree from McGill University and Ph.D. from Mt Sinai Medical School of NY, both in Immunology.
